About Us

Biology is what makes Mrs. Harms tick, and she gets others enthusiastic about it as well. She’s an amazing educator who teaches AP Biology at West High School, and in 2022, she became the sponsor for West High Biology.

In February 2024, West High Biology sent a team to the Iowa Regional High School Science Bowl in Des Moines, IA. The Bowl was a two hour drive away, and six people needed to be transported to the competition venue. Mrs. Harms made it happen! She took the initiative to go through the process of getting certified to drive an official ICCSD vehicle. Then, starting bright and early at the crack of dawn so we’d make it on time, she drove the entire team to the Bowl.

Not only does she go the extra mile, she motivates others to do so as well. Recently, several West High Biology members were collaborating on a research project on the predictive power of artificial intelligence in synthetic biology. They reached out to Mrs. Harms for mentorship. She served as a mentor to the group along with Mr. George Alexander, AP Computer Science teacher at West High. In April 2024, this research work was presented at the 2024 Harvard/MIT Future of Biology Conference in Cambridge, MA.
